Eyang Titiek Puspa adorably mentioned that Temanggung is her beloved hometown [Instagram @/titiekpuspa_official]

TheIndonesia.co - Sembah sujud ananda / Dirgahayulah kakanda / Jayalah dikau pahlawan / Terus maju pantang mundur (with humble devotion, I bow to you / Long live, my dearest / Shine on, oh brave warrior / March forward, never retreat).”

These poignant lines, filled with reverence and patriotism, were penned and performed by the legendary Indonesian songstress, Titiek Puspa, in 1963. She’s the melody of my family visits to Temanggung. It’s become a quiet family tradition, a way to feel close to her spirit and to the land we both call home. Her voice feels like it’s still there—in the rustling of tobacco leaves, in the morning mist that drapes over Sindoro and Sumbing, in the warmth of every familiar face.

We’re endlessly proud to share the same hometown with her, Titiek Puspa. Known for her melodic depth and lyrical grace, Titiek Puspa passed away peacefully on April 10th, 2025, at the age of 87. Indonesia now bids farewell to not just a beloved artist, but a cultural icon whose influence spanned over seven decades.

Beloved granny of the nation: Eyang Titiek Puspa (1937-2025) [Instagram @/titiekpuspa_official]

Born as Sumarti binti Jatin Toegeno Poespowidjojo on November 1st, 1937, in Tanjung, South Kalimantan (Indonesia's Borneo), her path to becoming Titiek Puspa was shaped by numerous transformations—not just in name, but in destiny. From “Kadarwati” to “Sudarwati,” the affectionate "Titiek" eventually emerged, paired with “Puspa,” a tribute to her father's name, Poespowidjojo. This evolution marked the start of a lifelong journey in the Indonesian arts.

Her childhood unfolded amid turbulent times. Her family migrated to Java, initially settling in Ambarawa, and later in Maron, Temanggung, as conflict surged during Indonesia’s fight for independence and subsequent Dutch military aggression.

These early experiences rooted her deeply to Temanggung, a place she later honoured not just with nostalgic memories, but with action—by renovating her childhood home and building a mosque for the community. Locals affectionately call it Masjid Titiek Puspa, a tribute etched in daily life.

Nationally, she was known with warmth and admiration as Eyang Titiek, or Granny Titiek—a title that encapsulated not just her age, but the profound respect and love from generations who grew up with her voice, humour, and wisdom. Her contributions to Indonesia’s music and film industry are monumental. She wasn’t just a singer; she was an actress, a songwriter, a playwright, a comedienne, and above all, a storyteller.

Her accolades spanned decades: Juara Bintang Radio Jenis Hiburan Jawa Tengah (1954), the BASF Lifetime Achievement Award (1994), recognition as one of The Immortals by Rolling Stone Indonesia (2008), and the Dedication for Indonesian Music Award from AMI in 2021. But perhaps her greatest legacy lies in her songs—like the one above—delivering soft yet resolute patriotism through the eyes of a woman watching her husband leave for war, embracing the bittersweet sacrifice for the homeland.

Instead of writing patriotic song lyrics that dedicated to the heroes of our nation, Eyang Titiek Puspa expressed her ways in giving appreciation for Indonesia' notable persons as quoted from Deddy Corbuzier's podcast programme Close The Door.

"In my 80th birthday, I had made "tour of graves" that must be done in eight places refers to the first number of my age: 8.  But gratefully, I managed into 13 heroes' cemeteries, including the grave of Wage Rudolf Supratman, the composer and songwriter of Indonesia Anthem, and Ismail Marzuki, also a musician, composer and songwriter," she explained.

Her life wasn’t just defined by accolades, but by the joy she gave others. In one of her interviews, Titiek Puspa once said, "Kalau kita hidup untuk berguna bagi orang lain, hati kita jadi lapang. Hidup jadi lebih indah  (if we live to be of use to others, our hearts become spacious. Life becomes more beautiful)."

This was her essence. Whether through songs that stirred the soul, or laughter that lifted spirits, she lived to give. And she gave so much—music, meaning, and memories.

Now, as her voice finds peace beyond the mountains she loved, may her words remain a soft reminder: a generous heart is the most timeless song of all.

Rest in eternal harmony, Eyang Titiek. The mountains of Temanggung may echo your songs forever, and your spirit will dance on in every heart that hums your tunes.
